Mary Mpembee is a contemporary visual artist from Tanzania whose practice uses symbolism and abstraction to transform ideas into visual experiences. Beginning with questions rather than images, she explores how ordinary objects become metaphors for contemporary life — identity, femininity, belonging, and human connection.
Her work invites viewers to recognise themselves within familiar symbols, creating moments of understanding where lived experience suddenly becomes visible. Rooted in curiosity, observation, and a love of visual invention, her paintings seek to capture what it feels like to live in this era — while ensuring people, particularly women, feel seen within it.
Born and raised in Tanzania, Mary discovered her love for art as a child by creating handmade greeting cards for friends and family. The joy of making something unique became the foundation of her artistic practice.
Although largely self-taught, she is currently refining her practice at Nafasi Art Space Academy. With a background in Urban and Regional Planning, principles such as rhythm, repetition, balance and spatial organisation continue to inform her compositions.
She began exhibiting professionally in 2026, including the group exhibition Give to Gain at Rangi Gallery. Mary draws inspiration from everyday observations, books, films, nature, dreams and conversations — carrying a notebook to capture ideas as they arise.
Every painting begins with a question: What if? Ideas are researched, sketched and developed into symbolic compositions. Rather than depicting objects for their own sake, Mary uses them as metaphors that help viewers recognise aspects of their own lives. She continually experiments with materials while maintaining acrylic on canvas as her primary medium.
